Philosophy of Education
I believe that in order to be an effective and inspiring teacher, that rather than focusing more on knowledge, I must turn my focus on how this knowledge can and will impact and inspire the lives of children beyond the classroom. My goal as a teacher is to cultivate a passion for the learning of language arts but also to reach further in an effort to create effective and influential citizens and leaders in our students as well. It is my privilege as a teacher to be a role model to these students in being an involved and productive citizen in our school and surrounding community.
The purpose for teaching English Language Arts is to encourage and invite students to read, write, and think. Engaging students and building relationships offers students the ability to partake in concepts relevant to real-world issues and ideas. Using both a sound curriculum and student choice presents models of various literary pieces, offers a student-led and teacher-facilitated environment, and gives kids exposure and confidence to initiate and engage in learning.
My goal as a teacher is to open the minds of students so that I can inspire and develop each student’s unique abilities. The 21st century is full of diverse learners and in turn, teachers must be prepared to go into their teaching career armed with many various teaching strategies which can benefit each student’s unique and individual learning needs. As Theodore Brameld claimed in his theory of Reconstructionism in Education, we as teachers need to provide hands on experience for students so that they can better retain and apply knowledge. Students need to become involved in their learning and as a teacher I will take the role as guide and facilitator in an effort for students to take more initiative and ownership in their own education. Technology is on the rise in classrooms and I aim to use this to my advantage while teaching. I believe students need to learn in ways which are relevant to them and in doing so, I seek to teach them in ways which they use every day.
I believe that it is more important to assess students through mastery and progress rather than how much information they are able to cram the night before and put back down on a piece of paper. As an English teacher, I believe writing portfolios are the best way to grade students on mastery of the writing process as well as using the writing as an agent in improving student’s abilities in close reading of various texts taught throughout the year. I also believe that with classroom management, it is important to allow students a sense of ownership when it comes to instilling expectations and consequences. I will allow my students to collaborate with me in setting a list of classroom standards from both the learner and the teacher and consequences to follow. It is important that the teacher keeps up consistency when instilling any consequences that may follow when a student fails to meet an expectation.
While it is important for teachers to set an authoritative presence in the classroom, we should also create an atmosphere in which students feel safe and comfortable to learn and ask questions. My goal is to create an engaging learning environment while still instilling procedures for students to follow. I will hold high expectations and standards for my students but will also retain an atmosphere of kindness and compassion as well as respect from both students and the teacher.
